Welcome Back to Arlington!

August 31st, 2009

Today marks the beginning of the Fall 2009 Semester and if you are new to the Arlington Campus you might be interested in this recently updated campus map. This new map highlights the future site of Founders Hall,  as well as the current buildings that are in use on campus.  You can also pick up a copy at the Reference Desk if you don’t want to print one out yourself.

Of course no semester can start without some minor inconvenience, and this semester it’s Mason Money that is the cause of frustration. If you need to print out a copy of your schedule from the library for parking services, you will be notified that you will need to use your “offline balance.”  This simply means that while Mason Money is working out some kinks  you can still print up to $5.00 worth of print jobs. We are unsure when Mason Money will be  available to add funds using the cash teller machine, but in the meantime you can add funds with a credit/debit card at https://masonmoneyonline.gmu.edu.

Good luck and have a wonderful semester!

They’ve just announced that the “Make Do and Mend” culture is returning, with John Lewis reporting an increase in the sale of sewing machines.  The department store has also brought out a guide with the same name.

You may ask, why a sixty-two year old man would buy a sewing machine.  I probably won’t, but I used to be very handy with one, having been taught how to sew by my mother.

When we were first married, I used to make some of my wife’s clothes.  I can remember making several dresses and a long brown coat.  In fact, somewhere in this house is a short maternity dress, that I made in 1969 out of some red Dorcas fabric.

My father also taught me how to do proper carpentry, service cars, hang wallpaper and of course everything there is to know about real letterpress printing.

I don’t think we taught our children such a wide range of skills.  And I think that these days kids learn even less from their parents.

wayzgoose

August 31st, 2009

Yesterday I attended the 8th Annual Letterpress Wayzgoose and Steamroller Smackdown at the School of Visual Concepts Seattle.

Apparently a wayzgoose is a centuries old tradition, dating back to the 1600s, when printing masters would throw a celebration party for their apprentices and the printing season coming to a close.

SVC hosted the “Steamroller Smackdown”, in which design firms and local artists were challenged to use a 2-ton steamroller to produce giant posters.

First the artists create the mirrored template, then roll ink onto the surface, and laid it out on top of the poster paper and waited for the steam roller operator to back over it to make the print.

It was very entertaining to watch, and we even got to make our own small letterpress prints.

This autumn one of the most extensive discussions about biennials to date will take place in Bergen, Norway. Thirty three professionals from all over the world were given a reader containing seminal texts on biennials. We gave them homework and we did ours because we wanted this conference to make a difference.

Now they are coming to speak about the most vital topics related to biennials.
This is not your ordinary conference. Join us, take part in the think tank!

The Bergen Biennial Conference will bring together an international group of curators, critics, artists and art historians so as to benefit from their discussions of their findings, and create the occasion to reflect collectively about the practice and potential of biennials as institutions. Based on an earlier Call for Biennial Knowledge the organizers of the conference have identified and explored existing knowledge from different regions of the world. The conference will be made up of lectures as well as seminar style workshops with young and leading experts in the field. It will be complemented with an extensive publication, The Biennial Reader, aiming to be an important resource, and including existing seminal texts on biennials from around the world as well as newly commissioned essays.

As scholars and curators have acknowledged, the history of exhibitions is both one of the most vital and, paradoxically, ignored narratives of our cultural history. And given the increasing role of biennials and other perennial exhibitions of contemporary art in contemporary culture, it seems all the more necessary to critically examine them today. The impetus to do so now comes in response to the Bergen City Council’s plans to establish a biennial for contemporary art in Bergen, for which the Bergen Kunsthall has taken up the task of organizing an international conference and think tank to study and discuss the status of the biennial as an exhibition model, and also to launch a debate concerning the plans for a biennial in Bergen.

With: Sara Arrhenius, Carlos Basualdo, Ute Meta Bauer, Ina Blom, Charlotte Bydler, John Clark, Ann Demeester, Donna De Salvo, Jonas Ekeberg, Elmgreen & Dragset, Gridthiya Gaweewong, Ranjit Hoskote, Maria Hlavajova, Caroline A. Jones, Yakouba Konate, Sarat Maharaj, Vittoria Martini, Ivo Mesquita, Gerardo Mosquera, Paul O´Neill, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Olu Oguibe, Tommy Olsson, Rafal Niemojewski, Marit Paasche, Nikos Papastergiadis, Anri Sala, Vinicius Spricigo, Monika Szewczyk, Per Gunnar Eeg-Tverbakk, Mahita El Bacha Urieta, Jan Verwoert, Sabine B. Vogel.

At the occasion of the conference the entirety of the Wanda Svevo Historical Archive (Arquivo Histórico Wanda Svevo) on international biennials that was conceived as part of the 28th São Paolo Biennial (2008) and constituting the most comprehensive documentation source on biennials anywhere, will be present and available for consultation in the Bergen Kunsthall.

Conference program conceived by: Solveig Øvstebø, Marieke van Hal and Elena Filipovic.

Conference founded by the City of Bergen, by the Departments of Cultural Affairs, Business Development and Sports.

Supported by Hordaland County and Arts Council Norway.

There are quite a few freeware products around which do a reasonable job burning CD/DVD’s but very few which include a disc to disc copying feature. Nero have recently released a cut down version of their latest commercial software which does incorporate that function…best of all it is free!

Nero 9 Free Version includes all the usual disc burning features plus disc to disc copying. Some might say, coming from Nero, it is too little too late but I say…never look a gift horse in the mouth! Those who use DVD Shrink on a regular basis should be particularly delighted with this freebie, as Nero is the only burning software which syncs seamlessly with that application.

Carrbridge News Leaflets

August 29th, 2009

Designed these to promote ‘Carrbridge News’ a new online news sharing video programme (Carrbridge Films Project) Had 420 printed – one for every house in Carrbridge…

Poster printing can be customized to advertise any product, service, or special event. Here are the five tips to remember when advertising with posters.

#1 Know what you need to tell viewers – Decide the main point of what viewers need to know and stick to it. Don’t lose focus or your poster will lose impact. Whittle your copy down to just the essential information that the viewer needs in order to know who you are, how to contact you, find your shop/event, choose you over the next guy. Remember: keep it simple.

#2 Organize info – Organize the information in a way that will make sense and get viewers from one point to the next. Draw them through a chronological order of events: statement of problem/issue, statement of solution, statement of why you provide the best solution, how they can reach you.

#3 Sell with benefits – Sell your product, service, or event with the benefits to the viewers in mind, whether they will benefit as your customers, by the entertainment value of your event, or perhaps there are environmental benefits to be gained. Let viewers know the outstanding benefits that you provide in a way that no one else does. Or how you are working together with other organizations to provide benefits. Your stance will depend on the nature of your product, service, or event.

#4 Use high quality images – Great images are an ideal way to attract attention. Images should be high quality and pertinent to the subject matter. Don’t use too many images. One large, high resolution image for your poster printing project that makes an impact is better than too many small, busy images.

#5 Use a professional printer – The quality of your poster prints will make a huge difference to passersby. Find a printing company who will create high quality poster prints at a reasonable price. You shouldn’t sacrifice quality for price, but good quality poster printing should not cost a fortune either. Request samples of the printer’s work and get quotes. A good professional printer should guarantee your satisfaction. Online printing companies are a great choice for poster printing because of the many options usually available at a relatively low cost.

Apple has published a series of official support documents for Mac OS X Snow Leopard, which ships today. These cover Finder and the desktop, the printing process, and more crucially a number of incompatible applications. A specific set of programs may be automatically moved to an “Incompatible Software” folder on a Mac, and/or blocked from being opened….
