Keep it a spot!

July 31st, 2009

Back in less simpler times, before Digital Printing was an available technology, companies had to use offset printing for all of their business cards, letterheads and envelopes. Now for those if you who may not be familiar with offset printing, each colour used requires a sheet of metal called a plate. The ink sticks to the areas on the plate where the colour is required and is then pressed onto a rubber roller which then transfers the ink onto the paper. Meaning that for a full colour job you would need 4 different plates – Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black for each side of the sheet that needed printing. This could become quite costly for smaller companies, which is where Pantone colours come in.

The Pantone Matching System is made up of 14 base colours that are mixed together to create a system of 1,114 different combinations which are all identified by a Pantone Matching System (PMS) number. On an offset press only one plate is required for each PMS colour which makes it easy to add colour to any job without using an expensive 4 colour process. Companies would choose specific PMS colours that would be used in all of their branding and logos.

Now that Digital Printing has become more affordable, more people are using it to print their stationary items. This becomes a problem if the company has a specific PMS colour they want to match since digital presses can only use the 4 CMYK colours to print… which is a lot less than the 14 that PMS colours use!

At Mission Stream, our digital presses are run by Colour Management Servers that very closely match most PMS colours. Each server can identify when a PMS colour is used within a file and pull up their “recipe” of CMYK to use to get close to the required PMS colour. It’s not perfect, and some colours match better than others, but we think it’s better than paying more for offset!

In order for our equipment to do this, it’s important that the PMS colours are identified as “Spot” colours in the native files used to create the document. If they are converted to their CMYK equivalent, our servers won’t properly identify them which may produce less than desirable results.

How colours are handled by our presses has been illustrated in our new Marketing Brochure. If you don’t have one yet, you can request one by sending us an email at info@missionstream.ca.
If you are concerned about how your company’s specific PMS colours will print, we will be more than happy to help you by doing some test prints and working with you to get the colour you desire!

With virtually thousands of printing companies vying for your business to create and supply you with your business cards, there is no wonder so many people get confused when choosing a printer. Many printers offer a wide selection of designs to choose from and this makes it even harder for many people to choose. You may like one design from one printer but would rather have a thicker, glossy, color or embossed business card that another printer offers.

Cost of your Business Cards

There are lots of printers who offer various pricing on your business cards. Some will even print your cards for free however the idea is to be able to hand out business cards leaving a good impression on the recipient of the card. Remember, “You get what you pay for” and sometimes with free cards it means advertisements for the printing company. Many free business cards will definitely print your business cards for free, but when you turn the card over, there is virtually another business card for the printer on the back of yours. This is not the type of business card you want to hand out to your clients. Also consider the weight of the card itself. Most business cards are printed on 14 – 15 point thickness paper. Free business cards are printed on 12 point and are very flimsy. In addition, when purchasing business cards one must consider your corporate needs in terms of letterhead stationery, brochures, envelopes and post cards. Purchasing your business needs from one printer will give you the quality of print on all of these, printed on like stationary, and keep your business supplied with your business needs at a moment’s notice.

The Standards for Business Cards

Standard business cards are printed on a variety of thicknesses and measure 2” x 3.5”. This is the normal business card dimensions and is, in all honesty, the perfect sized card. However you must be concerned with the thickness of the card in order to provide your associates and customers with a card that isn’t going to fall apart the first time they pull it out and look at it. A good business card will be printed on a coarse, 14 – 15 point paper. This paper holds up much longer than the 12 point free business cards many printers offer.

Color or Black and White

When purchasing your business cards, you will want a card that offers as much eye catching material as you can get. A business is only as good as their business cards, so you must consider whether to purchase color or black and white business cards. If you are thinking about color cards, make sure to examine samples of their cards. You will want to make sure your cards do not have white lines streaming across the card where color should be. Your business cards should have to correct application of ink as well. This means in areas that should have a darker shade of the same color, the ink should be slightly thicker. These are just a couple of reasons many companies recommend black and white cards.

Good morning sunshine!

Good Morning Sunshine!

Good Morning Sunshine!

My wonderful, awesome earth! Tis, I…Fan’aye SunLight. I have been on a seriously humorous, bittersweet journey and whew! We have still got more to go and while I journey, I am looking for the good in all creation because mass media has our glorious universe projected so weak, dismal and hopeless.

Good morning sunshine! I am on a quest to publish, set up a standard and conceal not. And as I design, print and weave my creativity across the sky to explode into bits and pieces of an orgasmic rainbow, I am reminded to be still, inhale, listen and radiate like the SUN before my day is done.

Mother Earth, even though I design websites and print media for clients near and far, I can’t help but chant a positive prayer before I start their work. For we all need the rays of the resplendent light of the SUN to shimmer and shine and remove fear and darkness. And if we all are benevolent, this so called recession will be done.

Mama Earth, I am on a mission to seek out beauty, love, peace, intelligence, balance, perfection in imperfection and a host of goodness that will help me keep it on the positive. And trust me, I can be like lava sometimes, and if one day in heaven is like a thousand on earth, then I am not even a day old in heaven! I’m still a babe. (Be patient).

Positive Imagery and Multimedia is my passion and I invite you all to share empowering, uplifting, inspiring and yes, raw, shocking and eye popping information that will help us remove the scales from the eyes and the plugs from the ears. For if that is what it takes to remind us that we are not ordinary but supernatural and awesome and fearless vessels of positive energy birthed to enjoy creations glory.

Mama Mia! So goooood it is to meet ya!

What is publishing?

July 31st, 2009

Seems a ridiculous question perhaps?

Well in days gone by, publishing referred to getting a book or magazine printed so that it would reach a wide audience. In some cases this was done for educational purposes, in some cases it was done to make money.

The concept of getting your ideas to reach a wide audience is as valid today as it has ever been. The purposes of publishing for education and for income income remain.

However, the audience can now be wider than ever and is more easily accessed, thanks to computers and the internet.

These days, publishing is not restricted to physically printing something and making it available to others. Publishing includes material posted on the internet (like e-journals*, e-zines*, e-books*) and material available in digital or electronic form (PDFs** and CDs).

So let your creativity roam free, and get publishing!

* e-journal = electronic journal; e-zine = electronic magazine;
e-book = electronic book
**  PDF = portable document format (does not care what operating system you computer uses)

Did you ever hand over your business card, go for the shake with a prospective client and after they quickly glance at your card they pull their hand away and say ”thanks, we will call YOU”. Ouch that HAS to hurt. The bad part is that you will leave thinking they will call you and when they don’t you just don’t understand why.

Have you ever received a phone call at your place of business and the person on the other line started asking for low mien, an extra egg roll and yelled at you to not forget the duck sauce this time? Instead of hanging up, ask them who they are calling. Yeah, they have it right, they are calling you.

We all think we have the best ideas for the “face” of our business and that our image is cool and that others “get it”. Have you ever asked your clients what they think? Or even your kid brother who you know has heard what you do five hundred times over Sunday get together’s? Well ask them. It may not be what you want to hear.

It’s time to face up to your business image and Get Fresh…labs that is.

There is more to creating and promoting a brand than making a cool logo and catchy tagline. In fact, a logo and tagline are just representations of your brand. Don’t just maintain your brand, create or recreate it to promote itself!

Get Fresh Rules For Branding:

1) Pinpoint- Be specific
Know what your brand stands for, and know what your brand delivers. Your brand deliveries should be specific and attainable, and you should be able to communicate them clearly. This is what will make your brand stand out from your competition.
2) Be Strong- Grow some muscles
Once you know what your brand stands for and delivers, don’t be shy…show off. You need to make everyone else believe you’re the leader of the pack in your area of expertise. Don’t mumble about what your company does. Say it with “musclability” and conviction.
3) Constancy- Keep the flow steady
Get your brand message out there and keep a steady pace. It will take some time…hold those horses but keep that giddy up ready! A consistent message and a positive customer experience are critical elements to building your brand. So get out your calendar and get that routine down pat.
4) Honesty- A virtue YOUR business must possess
This one is simple: Do as you say and say as you do…every time! Don’t offer anything….we mean anything… if you can not follow through on it! Integrity goes a long way and karma counts even in business.
5) Push yourself but not the customer
Get your brand message out there. Then get it out again and again and again. People are inundated with ad after ad, call after call each day. It’s not only critical that you try to stand out from the competition but it’s equally important that you are not forgotten. One thing to remember is that not everyone will need what you are offering and in that case remember to thank them kindly because they just may know someone who does!

Ask Yourself This:

Or rather do this: Next time you get someone’s business card take a quick peek…don’t let them see (this takes practice). Ask yourself, “what does their image say about them?”

If It has you tasting Chinese food, be kind and say “hey have you ever stopped by Get Fresh Labs?” If they gave you that impression then you know the answer. Then shake their hand and say “I will call you and give you their number.” Remember…karma? Do the right thing and we will treat you to an eggroll with extra duck sauce next time we see YOU!

shutterflyConsumers are still looking to hold onto their memories with hard-copy photographs. At a time when many tech-savvy users are uploading their entire photographic lives to Facebook or Flickr (s yhoo), many others — especially those with kids looking to send pictures to grandparents or other far-away relatives who might not be as computer literate — are going to sites like Shutterfly (s sfly) to get their digital pics printed out. Shutterfly yesterday reported its second-quarter revenue grew 10 percent year over year to $38.9 million, with customers and orders up 13 percent and 6 percent, respectively, despite the economic slowdown.
