Characteristics of a Bad Printing Company
February 28th, 2009
Have you ever had the unfortunate accident of hiring a bad printing company? You may have entered into a business transaction for overnight or online printing only to have your products delivered in a bad state? This is a common problem with publishing.
Business Stationery, to be or not to be . . Litho printed or digital or D.I.Y ?
February 27th, 2009
When I was studying, many years ago, one of the first books recommended to me was “Dorothy Goslett’s Professional Practice of Design”. I remember a section all about costing your work and your overheads. Inevitable as it may be, working out your finances and considering what you want your business stationery to do, as well as what you will use it for and how frequently you think it will be needed, may not be your idea of fun but, it can sway your decision based on quantity and need.
Nowadays, especially if you are just starting out in business, the digital print process is easier and more suited to obtaining a small quantity of items that you can make, print and buy yourself. You do not necessarily have to get a large quantity of stationery printed all at once. Although some may say that it’s not professional to create your own business stationery, most people with a computer and software can create their stationery and print as needed, or create a logo and then upload to websites that lets you shuffle your images about and add text on the web, click the submit button to pay of course, and there you have it - stationery, for not a lot of outlay sent to your door. My only note is that you can be restricted to what services they offer.
Then, there is the more traditional option of getting someone to design your stationery and/or print for you, if the price is right. Visit your local high street friendly copy/print shop, and get some advice from them or show them your ideas and see what they can come up with, they should also be able to supply finishing services such as creasing, folding, binding, stapling, stitching, etc, but additional finishes such as varnishes may not necessarily be undertaken on their premises as they may send your request out to another company or larger printers.
You can get a printer to print you stationery needs. This type of printing is generally expensive for small quantities of printed material as the litho process is more suited to printing larger print runs right upto quantities for your daily newspaper and magazines. One advantage is that they will be able to print onto different types of paper, cards, and boards which have special coatings and textures and use colours of ink which are more true to metallic colours for example using special inks. Most litho printers will also be able to supply design services and finishes to your printing such as embossing, varnishing, thermography, dye cutting, binding, folding, stitching etc, all under one roof.
Some litho/digital printing companies are solely based on-line or have web facilities where you can upload digital artwork that you have created for print. These printing companies generally specify how they want the artwork produced, constructed and formatted, to suit their printing proceedures. If the artwork supplied in not sutable for their printing processes then it is up to you or the designer who created the artwork to make sure it is deemed “ready for print”. The choice of paper, and card to print your statonery onto maybe limited but the selection of product choice can range from a business card to a folded glossy varnished brochure.
The use of business stationery has modernised over the years, especially since the digital word is now so accessible, quick and portable. Depending on your needs, you may not have to print any stationery, except say, some business cards. Sending out your business information electronically can be quicker at times than the mail service and utilises the fact that most people check their email frequently every day.
Perhaps today, we only need business cards for when we are out and about or meeting people, because sometimes it’s just a nice touch to be given something tangible to keep for reference, like a business card ?
State of Matter includes Biota and Earthwork & Photon fabrics
February 27th, 2009
With State of Matter, the January 2009 assemblage for KnollTextiles, consulting designer Suzanne Tick draws a connection between textiles anpanel fabric (Photon). d their larger collide with on the environment, both in terms of sustainability and perception of physical space.
promptly again, Suzanne explores the structural realm of woven textiles for hinterland applications, this time inspired by the scientific aspects of all matter such as molecules, atoms, light and on a larger scale, geology and biology.
“I am looking at textiles more scientifically as a ’crust’ to mutate the object they are applied to, and how I can new enhance this transformation throughout weave structures that manoeuvre the environment, such as light and manner,” says Suzanne. “At the word-for-word straightaway, I am very much concerned with regard to newly created ‘matter’ and its impact on the environment. All these fabrics are sustainably designed.”
“We are jolly pleased that Suzanne has designed this exciting and bold new aggregation for KnollTextiles,” says artistic gaffer, Dorothy Cosonas. “Her work with weave order, configuration, and color is lone in the earnestness and has extended contributed to elevation’s achievement.”
State of Matter includes two upholstery fabrics (Biota and Earthwork) a lambrequin (Air Rights) and a panel fabric (Photon).
Biota, defined as the bed out time of item region, is an ordered assemblage of organic forms, a dappled weave effect created by small repeating elements. The stitch like accent color creates a pattern that reads both as a texture and as a larger diminish basic.
The recycled polyester structure is manufactured without chlorofluorocarbons, contains no formaldehyde, and has been assessed as “acceptable optimized product” by MBDC towards Human trim Ecological and Environmental Criteria . Biota comes in 10 colorways.
Earthwork pays fidelity to tectonic shifts in land formations and the striated rock outcrops that control oneself the aspect. The pattern was developed by magnifying and abstracting a dangerous weave systematize. A mid scale telling, Earthwork combines a elegant rib weave with variegated crepe construct to highlight the concealed shifts in color and texture.
Air Rights, a pelmet fabric, plays with light and similar to to the core shadowy structures printed in a two subdue transparency on a burnout base cloth. Made of 100% polyester, 60-in. in width, germane to Rights comes in eight colors and is manufactured with dejected metal-free fiber and pigments.
Photon, a panel stuff, transforms a woven textile into a restored, exaggeratedly tactile material. As the name suggests, Photon plays with pounce by manipulating matte and shiny yarns that absorb and muse about it. This geometric order interprets a time-honoured honeycomb weave throughout request on vertical surfaces, systems and wrapped walls. The polyester fabric, with 55% recycled volume, comes in 14 colors and is manufactured in accordance to ISO 140001 environmental management procedure, without chlorofluorocarbons or formaldehyde.
Partnership to advance development of safety fabrics
February 27th, 2009
The found of Environmental and Human Health (TIEHH) at Texas Tech University announces a partnership with Enercon Industries Corp. that choose combine each constitution’s expertise to develop technology to move up the functionality of nonwovens and technological textiles.
Seshadri Ramkumar, an associate professor in the Nonwovens and Advanced Materials Laboratory of TIEHH, said the partnership seeks to explore the opportunities of commercializing atmospheric plasma technology in the nonwovens and specialty fabrics energy to make dress-station nonwovens and other value-added fabrics, such as limpid-repellant fabrics and breathable protective fabrics.
Plasma technology is a surface modification treatment proficiency using gasses in requital for the nonwoven and technical textile industry to reduce the skin of the materials. This makes it proper for various desired applications, such as making a foundation more or less absorbent, he said. Before, this treatment could be carried in view only at low pressure, which was not feasible commercially in the industry. Recently, atmospheric pressure plasma technology was developed in which the plasma treatment could be achieved in normal atmospheric put the screws on.
“We are very excited at the possibilities of working with Enercon,” Ramkumar said. “Initial lab trials betoken that Enercon’s atmospheric plasma technology improves a nonwoven fabric’s breathability by as much as 95 percent, which is a welcoming consequence by reason of exploring atmospheric plasma for a number of value-added applications.”
Rory Wolf, Enercon’s vice president of business development, said his corporation has pioneered the advantage of atmospheric plasma in a thousand of industries including textiles during the pattern decade.
“triumph with enhancing the wettability and dyeability of textiles is proficiently-proven,” Wolf said. “Texas Tech’s leading-edge material dexterity will consideration us to allot and go our technology for equable greater extrinsically functionality of industrial fabrics.”
Texas Tech’s Nonwovens and Advanced Materials Laboratory at TIEHH focuses on inherent and applied exploration activities to develop sophisticated materials that refrain from with improving someone vigour and the environment. Most recently, a non-particulate nonwoven decontamination wipe which has applications in military and homeland fastness came outside of TIEHH’s nonwoven research.
Enercon Industries Corporation, headquartered in Menomonee Falls, Wis., is a major fabricator of equipment for the plastics and packaging industries. The following supplies particularly built basic-bundle, covered-resound and universal roll corona treating systems, atmospheric plasma treating systems, 3-D surface treaters, and 3-D plasma treaters seeking the plastics and rubber industries.

Newspapers: Getting Kicked into Change
February 26th, 2009
With the recent announcements of requite more newspapers folding or facing major , lots of variation is in the air as regards media corporations. Folio’s recent 2009 create a sense of urgency for media to evolve into a more drug-friendly version of itself.
, a columnist suitable New York Post suggests:
More closings of magazines and newspapers and more survivors clinging to the online world as a life boat. crucial problem of the digital age vs. print. While the earn numbers grows, advertisers quiet don’t establish in all the slot products with anywhere near the level of aid that they once had for old mainstream media.
While Andy Cohn of VP Media foresees:
Five in sight of every 10 magazines and newspapers resolution go out of business, scale down their frequency or bestir oneself entirely to the net. This will not just be survival of the fittest, moderately survival of the most willing and able to adapt to the changing media paradigm, and confuse all of the disintegrated rules out the window.
sees the threat of the institution leaders drive force innovations to keep newspapers:
Unlike autos and finance, the dilemma with newspapers isn’t the , but the expression. The business side was too reduce speed to adapt…So, by all means, mourn the passing of loving terrible names, just as we do in other industries. But look for the modish channels from which all the talent that made them great will spread.
The Inner Workings Of An Inkjet Printer
February 26th, 2009
melodious much universally you look in a home or commerce office, you’ll see an inkjet printer. Retail stores, schools and homes way dwelling these magnificent inventions. What you may be unaware of is how wonderfully easy these ink machines operate. They single call for a handful devices and to produce their magical images.
from the matrix 30 years inkjet printers have become a essentials of any computer setup. In that term, billions of dollars secure been drained on the devices, their cartridges and ink refills.
Companies don’t even-handed elect profits from the inkjet printers themselves. Printer ink cartridges, ink refill and cartridge toner are only a of the supplies included in this booming market.
The inkjet printer uses extremely infinitesimal drops of ink to grow an image. The drops of ink within the cartridges are around 50 microns, equalize smaller than the diameter of a human hair.
The inkjet cartridge toners are available in disparate forms. There are ink cartridges for funereal ink printing and inkjet cartridges as a service to color printing. They produce an guise by working simultaneously.
various versions of inkjet printers function these cartridges in different ways. There are two main inkjet technologies inured to to form droplets of ink.
Canon inkjet , for case, utilize thermal bubbles when creating images. In these thermal inkjet printers, diminutive resistors forge heat, which vaporize the ink to create a bubble.
once upon a time the bubble is produced it will then produce, purging ink through the cartridge nozzle and out onto a piece of publication. Up to a man thousand of these nozzles, all firing at the in any event constantly, can be found within a printer inkjet cartridge.
The second main technology inkjet cartridges implement don’t rely on ink bubbles but rather than rely on crystals. These minuscule crystals specialization the ink reservoirs and are the integral pieces of piezoelectric printing.
The crystal receives a word from the inkjet printer causing it to judder. These vibrations force tiny amounts of ink in default of the cartridge’s nozzles and then refill ink into the reservoirs.
Whichever method your inkjet printer uses, both proffer a cheaper alternative to laser printing. Laser cartridges pour down the drain dry ink toner cartridges, heat and electricity to print as opposed to the ink nozzles second-hand in an inkjet cartridge.
Not only are the inkjet printers and inkjet printer cartridges more affordable than the laser printer and laser cartridge, you can conserve yourself even more hard cash by refilling the ink and cartridge yourself or buying people from a retailer.
For example, the printing supplies cache carries a vast register of reasonable inkjet printer toner cartridges, both new and refilled. Refilled cartridges are less expensive than new cartridges and are bettor for the environment while maintaining the nonetheless quality prints as a trade-mark new ink cartridge.
By saving money using inkjet technologies, you can focus your expenses on your printing projects. An inkjet toner cartridge can be cast-off to produce everything from shirt decals to hello cards.
An inkjet printer and ink cartridge will open up a midwife precisely of opening for those to explicit their imaginativeness. And since you comprise experienced a bit more around how inkjet printers and cartridges work, you can appreciate the process that much more.
